The seawater contains a variety of salts and the salt content of surface seawater is generally between 3.2%~3.75%.Seawater is a natural electrolyte with high salt concentration and is one of the most corrosive medium of natural etchant.seawater corrosion refers to the corrosion of materials (mainly metal components) in the marine environment. metal corrosion is often neglected due to its concealment, chronic, spontaneous and autocatalysis. the metallic material of lamps used in marine environments are no exception,so the corrosion prevention of lamps here cannot ignore. when implementing the lighting project of marine environment, selecting effective anti-corrosion lamps has become the top priority in the project implementation.
Why seawater cause serious corrosion?
Electrochemical corrosion is the corrosion caused by electrochemical action of a metal in a conductive liquid medium. seawater corrosion is one of common electrochemical corrosion.
Seawater can be regarded as a electrolyte solution . and there is a certain amount of oxygen. The metallic materials of lamps (such as led flood light used used in wharves, led street light used on coastal roads, led area lights used in coastal recreational areas, led street light used on seaside boardwalks, led flood light used on the ships) in the Marine environment, affected by the composition of seawater in the air, are prone to electrochemical corrosion. In the course of corrosion, it accompanies with electron transfer.
so what does corrosion have to do with seawater in the air? in fact, it will accelerate the process of metal corrosion. because electrons move more easily in the salt water than they do in pure water. This is the truth behind the serious corrosion caused by seawater.
What factors should notice when choosing?
1) the housing material of lamp
Not all metals corrode seriously when exposed to seawater moisture in the air. For example, aluminum does not corrode .since it can react with oxygen in the air to form alumina on its surface. The alumina on the surface can isolate the water and oxygen in the air, preventing further reaction of the inner aluminum material, thus ensuring the anti-corrosion and durability of the material. And aluminum has good thermal conductivity, fast heat dissipation . this performance is also very suitable for those high power lamps used in large container wharves.So metallic aluminum is a good shell material for seaside lamps and lanterns.
2) the surface treatment of housing material
Coating is another effective method to prevent corrosion. Coating can isolate the surface of base material and the influencing factors of electrochemical corrosion, and form a protective layer on the surface of material. when selecting suitable lamps for marine environmental lighting projects, special attention should be paid to the base material of the light fixture and whether the base material is protected by a coating. Because these are related to the normal service life of the lighting equipment in the marine environment.
3) the IP rating of of luminaire structure
The lighting fixtures of marine ambient are constantly exposed to moist saline air for a long term. If the lamp does not have a great waterproof rating. Seawater molecules in the air will easily penetrate into the interior of the lamp. While LEDs is a kind of delicate semiconductor component. if salt water permeate , there will be a moisture absorption phenomenon on chips, which will damage LEDs, PCB and other components and cause corrosion to the internal components. so the waterproof of lamps is very critical. good IP rating can ensure the long-term , stable and normal work of lighting fixture in the seaside.
4) the chosen sealing material of pressure vent
Generally ,the outdoor luminaires such as LED street light, LED flood light etc will produce a lot of heat after they are lit a period of time. this heat then cause the internal air to swell and force the air to discharge from the lamp. On the contrary , While lamps are turned off and cools down, there will be a suction generated inside the lamp in turn and inhale the external air, water vapor and dust together into lamp. To settle this problem without sacrificing the waterproof property of lights , these outdoor luminaires are often fitted with pressure vent .there is a vent ,there is a need to use a suitable gland for waterproof treatment.
If the size and material of gland size material do not meet the relevant requirements, the tightness of the lamp will also be reduced. When they are work at marine environment , there will be a higher risk of lamps to be percolated by seawater vapor. if not taken care enough,this unnoticeable pressure vent can turn into a serious threat.

Salt spray test is an important experiment to evaluate the corrosion resistance of products. The results show the corrosion resistance of the designed lamps. The salt spray test report can be used as a reference standard when selecting lamps for coastal lighting projects.
