Infrastructure Lighting: Case Studies in Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings

AGC Lighting

Around the world, governments and municipalities are working quickly to replace old infrastructure with energy-efficient, low-carbon solutions. In the UK, a new £725 billion, ten-year infrastructure plan gives local councils the stability to invest in long-term upgrades instead of short-term fixes.

A Stanford study of Philadelphia’s Streetlight Improvement Project showed a net benefit of $60 million, proving that investments pay off.

This represents opportunities. Cities, facility managers, and developers are looking for lighting that delivers measurable energy savings, improved public safety, smart controls, and alignment with their broader sustainability goals.

The era of selling lumens is over. Today, success lies in offering lighting as a strategic asset, one that enhances value and resilience over the long term.

In this blog, we’ll share 4 case studies of how our advanced lighting solutions are helping to turn ideas into real results, helping you to better serve your clients and capture their share of this fast-growing market.

What Is Infrastructure Lighting?

When people think of infrastructure lighting, streetlights often come to mind first. However, the scope is much broader. Infrastructure lighting refers to the lighting systems essential for the operation, safety, and efficiency of public and critical assets. This includes not only roads and highways, but also bridges, tunnels, airports, seaports, public transport hubs, parking structures, utility facilities, and public buildings.

At AGC, we have extensive experience in infrastructure lighting and a strong track record of helping clients secure and deliver successful projects. Here, we’ll showcase 4 key case studies that highlight our capabilities and results.

Case Study 1: LED Street Lights for Train Station

This project was our first collaboration with the client on an LED street lighting solution, and it resulted in a highly successful outcome. The client was extremely satisfied with the performance and efficiency of the final installation.

The key to this project's success lay in our professional optical design and advanced lighting simulations, which allowed us to deliver optimal lighting performance using the minimum number of fixtures. At AGC, we don’t just supply LED streetlights; we provide strategic lighting design tailored to each application.

For the train station, we delivered a total of 93 streetlights, strategically placed for maximum coverage and efficiency. The installation included 6 units of 50W streetlights and 87 units of 90W streetlights. R09602 optics was specifically chosen to evenly illuminate the railway tracks.

The result was a well-lit environment with excellent visibility, no glare to drivers or train operators, and enhanced safety across the station area.

Case Study 2: 25KM Roadway Including Bridges and Causeways

We completed a large-scale infrastructure lighting project spanning a 25-kilometer roadway, including several bridges and causeways.

This project required a high level of technical expertise and careful planning to meet strict performance, durability, and cost-efficiency requirements. Key challenges and design considerations included thermal management, corrosion resistance, and cost control.

We selected a low-copper aluminum housing, treated with a special powder coating designed for enhanced corrosion protection and environmental durability. To secure this particular project, we also provided accurate lighting simulations, comprehensive product testing, and strict quality management throughout the production process.

Our client was highly satisfied with the final lighting effect, praising both the visual quality and reliability.

Case Study 3: Tunnel Lighting Retrofits

In this project, our client required a sustainable and cost-effective solution to upgrade tunnel lighting by retrofitting LED light sources into existing HID fixture housings. The primary goals were to increase lighting performance, significantly reduce energy consumption, and minimize installation time by reusing the original housings.

To meet these requirements, AGC developed customized tunnel light retrofit kits with power supplies, specifically engineered to fit the client’s existing fixtures. The retrofit solutions achieved impressive energy savings:

  • 120W LED replaced 150W HID
  • 190W LED replaced 250W HID
  • 240W LED replaced 400W HID

A total of 636 retrofit kits were provided for the project. As part of the approval process, the client installed 40 units for initial testing. After two months of successful performance, the client confirmed the full order and proceeded with the installation of the remaining units.

AGC’s ability to deliver fast, precise customization and on-time delivery played a key role in the project's success. Our solution helped the client complete the project efficiently and strengthened their relationship with their end customer, opening doors to new opportunities.

Case Study 4: Street Lighting with LoRaWAN Control for Smart City

In this large-scale smart city project, our client required a complete street lighting solution equipped with LoRaWAN controllers to enable centralized, intelligent lighting management as part of a public tender.

To meet the project requirements, we provided 0–10V dimmable streetlights equipped with 7-pin NEMA sockets, allowing seamless integration with LoRaWAN controllers. A controller was installed on each lighting fixture, enabling two-way communication with the central system. The number and placement of LoRaWAN gateways were carefully planned based on the total number of fixtures and the physical distance between them to ensure reliable connectivity and coverage.

We also delivered a web-based central management system that allows city operators to monitor and control the lighting network remotely. Key smart features included:

  • Real-time and scheduled on/off control
  • Dimming capabilities by time, strategy, or sensor input
  • Monitoring of power, voltage, and current
  • Fault detection and alarm notifications
  • Group control and map-based monitoring
  • Predictive maintenance scheduling
  • Customizable control strategies for different zones
