How AGC Supports Emergency Lighting Compliance

AGC Lighting

In our previous post, we discussed BS 5266-1:2025, the latest UK Code of Practice for Emergency Lighting, and the key differences compared with the previous version.

With the release of the updated standard, one thing has become clear: emergency lighting requirements are becoming more stringent. The focus is no longer limited to illuminating “fire exits”; it now emphasizes the overall safe use of buildings during emergency situations.

The revised standard introduces stricter expectations for system performance, including longer backup duration, improved circuit resilience, automatic testing capabilities, and enhanced illumination in high-risk areas.

To support these evolving requirements, we provide emergency lighting solutions designed to help projects achieve compliance with relevant standards. Our solutions are not limited to BS 5266-1:2025. Through flexible design and tailored support, we help ensure that each solution delivers reliable performance while meeting the exact compliance and operational requirements of the application.

Emergency Backup Modules

When the main power supply fails, emergency lighting must provide sufficient illumination to allow occupants to safely complete ongoing tasks and evacuate the building if necessary.

We offer two customized emergency backup solutions for LED lighting systems.

The first solution uses a compact emergency backup module with an integrated light source that is attached to the main lighting fixture. This module connects to the fixture’s dimming control line and emergency battery backup. Because of its compact design and simple wiring, it can be easily integrated into many types of luminaires, including UFO high bay lights, linear high bay fixtures, and floodlights, making it a flexible option for retrofits and new installations.

The second solution is specially designed by AGC Lighting using a specially designed LED PCB Board. This solution redesign the LED PCB Board and add the emergency LED chips to be lit when powered off. Now, it is compatible with a wide range of modern LED drivers.

Emergency lighting duration is another critical factor for compliance and safety. According to BS 5266-1:2025, a minimum emergency lighting duration of three hours is required for buildings with phased evacuation procedures and for premises that may be reoccupied before the emergency batteries are fully recharged.

Our emergency lighting systems use LiFePO₄ batteries, which provide long operating endurance, extended service life, and excellent high-temperature resistance. These batteries support the required three-hour emergency operation, helping maintain reliable illumination during critical situations.

DALI Controlled Emergency Lighting

In many industrial lighting installations, emergency lighting systems are still tested and monitored manually. However, because luminaires are often installed at significant heights in warehouses, factories, and large facilities, it can be difficult to regularly inspect each fixture and verify that the emergency function is working properly. This challenge is one of the reasons why modern emergency lighting standards increasingly emphasize automatic testing and monitoring.

To address this need, AGC provides emergency lighting solutions equipped with DALI Self-Test technology.

Using a DALI-based control network, each luminaire can be individually addressed, monitored, and managed within the system. The DALI network also enables centralized monitoring, group control, and scalable system expansion, making it suitable for both small installations and large, complex industrial sites.

With automated self-testing and status reporting, the system can quickly identify potential faults or battery issues, ensuring that emergency lighting remains fully operational when a power failure occurs.

Explosion-Proof Lights with Emergency Backup

In high-risk industrial environments, such as oil and gas facilities, chemical plants, and food processing sites, safety standards require luminaires to operate reliably and safely under extreme conditions. Emergency lighting in these areas is critical for protecting personnel, equipment, and processes during a power failure.

According to BS 5266-1:2025, emergency lighting in high-risk task areas must provide a minimum of 15 lux or 10% of the normal lighting level, whichever is higher, and reach full illumination within 0.5 seconds of a power outage.

In these environments, workers cannot pause or wait for their eyes to adjust. Machinery must be safely shut down, processes controlled, and personnel evacuated efficiently.  lighting fixtures must be explosion-proof, while also providing reliable emergency backup.

At AGC Lighting, our explosion-proof emergency lights are designed specifically for these demanding conditions. For example, our HA06 series includes a built-in battery capable of delivering up to three hours of emergency operation. The ATEX and IECEx certified versions offer options for 90 minutes or 3 hours, while the NEC and CEC certified versions provide 90 minutes, ensuring compliance with regional safety standards.
