Why Outdoor Lights on the Beach Need to Be Amber Color ?

Lucy Xie

It is natural for female turtles to come ashore to lay eggs and for hatched turtles to crawl back into the ocean. However, artificial outdoor lighting near the beach can sometimes make it difficult.

Sea turtle’s nesting and return to the ocean are guided by cool white light. Generally in the wild, the source of white light is moonlight reflected off the surface of the ocean. Misuse of artificial lighting on beaches can deter female turtles and disorient hatchlings, leading to dehydration, predation by other species, or being run over when they crawl onto the road.

To combat this, lighting on the beach should be a warmer/amber light that contains as less blue light as possible. AGC has a wide range of amber light solutions available for beach projects. If you have similar projects, please contact us.
