Why Should You Use Asymmetrical Lights?

Lucy Xie

When buying a flood light, you may be asked which type of light beam will be needed: symmetrical or asymmetrical? So, what are the differences between symmetrical and asymmetrical lights ? Which one should you choose for lighting projects?

Differences between symmetrical and asymmetrical lights:

Symmetrical light sources distribute light evenly in all directions. However, asymmetrical light concentrates the light beam in one specific direction. between symmetrical and asymmetrical lighting.

The uniform spread of light in all directions is recommended for general lighting of large spaces, such as warehouses, offices, etc. Bright light that can be directed at a specific angle prevents wasting energy in areas where it is not needed.

Applications that use asymmetrical lights:

Take a floodlight as an example, floodlights with an asymmetric light beam are often used in stadiums, sports fields, etc. for they can create an optimal light effect on the sports ground for the players while lowering the indirect glare to the audience’s eyes.

In a road application, an asymmetric lens with an angle of 60*120 degrees will spread light at 60 degrees along the width of the road and at 120 degrees along the length of the road. This increases the distance between poles and reduces the number of poles and luminaires needed to light the road.
