How to Illuminate A Hangar Correctly

How to Illuminate A Hangar Correctly

Liz

According to our customers’ feedback for various hangar lighting projects, we conclude the following suggestions on how to illuminate a hangar properly.

The most important concern for hangar lighting is preventing accidents and increasing their ability to see small objects for the pilots and the maintenance teams.

Even Illumination

Usually a hangar is designed with highly reflective ceilings, walls and floors, which would reduce the number and intensity of the fixtures to be used, saving the client for both construction and energy costs. So you can choose suitable quantity of fixtures and proper lumen efficiency according to the environment finishes.

Anti-Glare

Glare can blind pilots when they are monitoring the plane so we need to avoid glare or bright points of light as much as possible in a hangar application filled with reflective components. Excessive glare also increases worker fatigue.

To solve this problem, we can use frosted or prismatic lenses, indirect lighting and strategic placement of fixtures within the space.

Color rendition

Besides the brightness, the highest available color rendering or CRI (Color Rendering Index) is critical for illuminating hangars too. Theoretically, minimum CRI 80 luminaires are highly recommended for hangars lighting to ensure that the workers can see the multiple colors of wiring and make proper connections in an aircraft.

Intelligent Controls

A well-designed control system of LED fixture can not only increase its efficiency and lifespan, but also can make the hangars realize double function , for example, as an event space to rent or for corporate functions. The Kansas City Downtown Airport has successfully done this for number of fundraisers and social events. The overhead lighting is dimmed down and portable colored led highlight the walls and aircraft creating a dramatic event space!

All things considered, we highly recommend our first generation high bay HB01.
