DOB High Bay Light Built for Extreme 80°C Heat

AGC Lighting

In high temperature environments, the electrolytic capacitor in an LED driver is highly sensitive to heat, and it is usually the first component to degrade, leading to flickering, dimming, or total failure.

We engineered the HB58 DOB high bay light to change this. By utilizing a driver-on-board (DOB) design, HB58 DOB has completely eliminated the electrolytic capacitor. The result is a high bay light that can thrive in high ambient temperatures up to 80°C, ideal for steel mills and foundries, power plants, and heavy manufacturing.

What Actually Fails First in a High-Temperature

In sustained heat above roughly 60 to 70°C ambient, the first component to fail in most LED high bay fixtures isn't the LED chip. It's the electrolytic capacitor inside the driver.

These capacitors rely on a liquid electrolyte that dries out faster as temperature climbs. As a rough reliability rule of thumb, capacitor lifespan roughly halves for every 10°C above its rated operating temperature.

In a high bay running at 70 to 80°C day in and day out, that's the difference between a driver lasting years and one failing within months, while the housing and the LEDs themselves haven't degraded at all.

These fixtures are mounted 20 to 40 feet up, often directly over active production lines. Every failure means a lift, a shutdown window, and a maintenance crew working above a hot floor, not just a light that needs replacing. For whoever speced or installed it, that's also a callback nobody wants.

How the HB58 DOB Is Built for 80°C Ambient Environments

"DOB" stands for Driver-on-Board. The driver circuitry sits directly on the LED board itself rather than in a separate housing with a standard driver. That architecture is what allows the HB58 DOB to run without electrolytic capacitors in the first place, removing the component most likely to fail first in sustained high heat.

The internal electronics sit inside a glass-pressurized assembly, which adds resistance to vibration, moisture, and the corrosive gases common in steel mills, foundries, and power plants. Those are conditions that shorten the life of standard fixtures even when heat alone isn't the issue.

It's also built to scale. A dual-module design lets you configure the HB58 DOB from 100W up to 400W, delivering up to 56,800 lumens, so the same platform covers a wide range of bay sizes and mounting heights without switching product lines.

Backed by Lab Testing

We tested the HB58-100 and HB58-150 in a chamber held at a sustained 80°C ambient for more than 8 hours, per IEC/EN 60598-1 Clause 12.4. Measured driver and LED temperatures stayed within their rated limits under that condition, not just at room temperature.

Where the HB58 DOB Fits

The HB58 DOB is built for facilities where ambient heat alone rules out standard high bay fixtures:

  • Steel mills and foundries: sustained radiant heat near melting, casting, and rolling operations
  • Power plants: boiler rooms and turbine halls with elevated ambient temperatures
  • Heavy manufacturing: glass production, forging, and other high-heat industrial processes

For facilities that combine high heat with explosive dust or gas, that's a different certification path. See AGC's explosion-proof lighting line, which is rated for hazardous (classified) locations.
