What Is Hazardous Location Lighting?

Hazardous location lighting is a lighting fixture that can be safely used in a space where a fire is likely to occur due to a hazardous material coming into contact with a lighting fixture.

These kinds of areas are referred to as hazardous locations, and are characterized by hazards such as vapors, dust, fibers, and gases. All these materials can be combustible, flammable, or ignitable in the presence of light.

Hazardous areas are categorized by divisions, classes, and groups. 

Class And Division for Code usage of Hazardous Location Lights

Below explains the three classes; I, II, and III.  

(1)Class I

Class I: Flammable vapors or gases may be present.

Zone 0: defined as the prolonged or extensive presence of explosive or combustible gases, vapors, or liquids during operating conditions, including most operating conditions.

Zone 1: defined as the existence of flammable or explosive liquids, vapors, or gases partly during normal operating conditions.

Zone 2: This is when there is less possibility of the presence of explosive liquids, vapors, or gases during normal operating conditions. 

(2) Class II

Class II : Locations where combustible dust that has the potential to become flammable may be present. Examples of locations that are considered class II include flour and feed mills, grain elevators, coal plants, and metal powder manufacturers, among others. 

(3) Class III

Class III – Locations where flyings and fibers that have the potential to become ignitable or flammable, may be present. Such locations include cotton gins, textile mills, etc. 

Apart from safety, performance is the key point that should be considered for an explosion proof lighting.
