What is Hazardous Location Lighting
Hazardous location lighting is a lighting fixture that can be safely used in a space where a fire is likely to occur due to a hazardous material coming into contact with a lighting fixture. These kinds of areas are referred to as hazardous locations and are characterized by hazards such as vapors, dust, fibers, and gases. All these materials can be combustible, flammable, or ignitable in the presence of light.
Hazardous Area Classifications
Classes
Class I - Gas
Locations are those in which flammable gases or vapours are present in the air in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures.
Class II - Dust
Locations are those that are hazardous because of the presence of combustible dust.
Class III - Fibers
Locations are those that are hazardous because of the presence of ignitable fibers or flying, but not likely to be in suspension in sufficient quantities to produce ignitable mixtures.
Divisions
Division 1 - Normally hazardous
Hazardous gases or dust are present under normal operation conditions or during frequent repair and maintenance activity.
Division 2 - Not normally hazardous
Hazardous gases or dust are not present under normal operating conditions.
