Golf Course Lighting (II) - Layout of Light Pole

Caroline Long

For some new golf courses, the layout of light poles should be carefully considered. Designers often need to balance achieving the best lighting effects while saving costs. Here are some requirements for light pole placement, and the actual projects can be adjusted according to the specific conditions and needs of the golf course.

Layout of Light Poles

  1. The placement of light poles should not obstruct the players' line of sight or interfere with the trajectory of the ball. They should be located at the boundaries or alongside the fairways, away from the fairways and pathways, to avoid interference with players and golf carts.
  2. The light poles should be positioned on the right side of the players when they tee off to avoid glare.
  3. The light poles should be arranged on the same side of the fairway as much as possible to facilitate wiring.

Shared Light Poles

Adjacent holes can share the same light pole, but it is important to ensure that each adjacent hole receives adequate illumination while reducing the number of light poles and maintenance costs.

Green Illumination

To ensure that the green area is free from shadows, it is recommended to install at least two light poles around the green, one on each side. This provides uniform illumination and ensures that players can clearly see the ball and details of the green while on the putting green.

Spacing between Light Poles

The spacing between light poles follows a 1:3 arrangement rule. Assuming the light poles are 15 meters high, the distance between each light pole is 45 meters. To save costs, the distance between light poles can be increased to more than 45 meters while ensuring sufficient lighting coverage, thereby reducing the number of light poles.

By the way, for retrofit projects, the layout of light poles is not necessary. Designers only need to select suitable lighting fixtures and design lighting calculations.
