The secondary optical design is based on the primary optical distribution design to solve how to let the light emitted by LED components shine on the predetermined lighting area, so that the light emitted by the lighting system can meet the design requirements.Different from primary optical design, secondary optical design is more concerned with the redistribution of light.
In the last post, we mainly talked about the secondary light distribution design by using lens. In fact, in addition to lens, reflector is also a commonly used light control component.
The reflector is usually made of stainless steel plate or alumina as the specular reflecting material.According to the requirements of the lamp manufacturer, generally the reflector makers will design the geometrical shape and size of reflector carefully according to the law of reflection. And then the designed reflector and the target lamps will be used together to achieve the design of light distribution.
Below is a schematic of how the reflector works. There are differences in the ability of reflection and light control among different reflectors. The higher the reflection ratio of the reflector, the stronger the regular reflection and the more significant the light control ability.
When it comes to the light distribution design with reflector, it is necessary to talk about the optical concept of shielding angle. Shielding Angle refers to the angle between a horizontal line through the light center and the line of sight at which the bare source first becomes visible.
Reflector is one of important accessories in optical design.Reflectors of different sizes have the function of adjusting the shielding angles and reflectors of different shapes can also direct light to predetermined lighting areas.
Under the condition of normal horizontal line of sight in humans, to prevent direct glare from high brightness light sources, the used lighting fixtures of various occasions must have at least a 10°-15° shielding angle. In the environment with high lighting quality requirements, the luminaires should have a shielding angle of 30°-45°.
The advantages and disadvantages of using reflector for light distribution design
advantages:
a) The optical and structural design is relatively simple.
b) Reduce glare effectively.
c) Realize the light distribution planning of lighting area.
d) Improve the light utilization efficiency of luminaires.
disadvantages:
a)The light in the middle is not controlled, shooting directly from the light source. the brightness of the middle area is relatively high, resulting in a strong glare of this area .
b) The diversity of light spot is insufficient. Therefore, it is rarely used alone for light distribution. generally It is used in conjunction with a lens to achieve some unconventional light distribution design.
Reflector is often used in commercial lighting, such as downlights, spotlights, projection lights, etc. In fact, not only commercial lighting, in industrial lighting and sports lighting, reflector also plays a big role.

In the lighting design of industrial project, sometimes for specific lighting needs, it is necessary to select appropriate reflector for the installed lamps to achieve a certain light distribution needs. As for when you need to use a lamp with a reflector, it depends on the specific application requirements. a lot of times reflector is only part of the overall lighting distribution design.
